Head lice may travel from garment to garment if they are touching. Another-words, do not share clothing of any kind. Also, if you know there is a lice epidemic going around, think twice before allowing your child to spend the night at some one else home.
Making a Head Lice Shampoo
Many kids have even contracted head lice from their bedding and carpet as well. You may want to consider washing you child’s hair in a mixture of their regular hair shampoo, one teaspoon of eucalyptus oil, four teaspoons of olive oil, and two teaspoons of tea tree oil. This shampoo is a good home remedy for repelling lice. Though it is not a 100% guarantee, tea tree oil does work well in helping to keep head lice at bay.
Some More Head Lice Home Remedies
If someone in the family does catch head lice, don’t panic. There are several home remedies for head lice removal. The first step is understanding that many oil based products will kill lice. The oil component makes it impossible for lice to breath. You may use either mayonnaise or olive oil to kill these nasty little bugs. Completely cover all stands of hair, hair lines, and neck line with either the olive oil or mayonnaise. Now place a plastic cap over the head, and use a low setting hair dryer over the top of the cap for about five minutes. The heat from the hair dryer will heat the oils, killing the head lice more quickly. Leave the cap on for approximately two hours.
Using a Head Lice Comb
Now you are ready to comb out the dead lice and nits(lice eggs). This is best done with a special lice nit comb which you can purchase online or from a drug store. Run the comb through each section of hair, starting at the base of the head. You may need to comb through the hair two or three times to be certain that all nits have been removed. It is important to remove them all as the oil treatment kills only live lice. Any left behind eggs may still hatch out. For the next three to four days, comb the hair with the special nit brush to continue removing any missed eggs. Repeat the oil treatment in one week as a preventative. This should rid you of your head lice problems.
